Customer Reviews

Awesome but not perfect This lens is amazingly sharp. The build quality is good and the focus ring is butter smooth. I use it on a Nikon D5300 and got spectacular results. Bought it mostly for Astrophotography but it does well with other pictures too. The long travel on the focusing ring is great for getting the focus precise. 5It is surprisingly sharp, especially considering the price! I have been doing some night photography and astrophotography with this lens. Just a note if you are considering buying this - it is a manual focus only lens, which may be a turn-off to some (not me) but on the plus side, it does work properly with the in-focus indicator on my Nikon cameras. It is surprisingly sharp, especially considering the price! My only wish (specifically for astrophotography, is that I had gotten the wider (10mm f2.8) version instead - but I will continue to use this great lens as my daytime landscape lens, and also continue to experiment with long exposures using my 10-stop ND filter, while I save up to get the other wider-angle lens by the same manufacturer in the near future. 5Budget greatness for landscape and nightscape photographers Optics: 5Few lenses can pull off the combination of a high level of sharpness wide open and low distortion, aberrations, and coma. This lens is sharper at f/2 than most of the lenses you own, though vignetting is pretty bad, covering a good portion of the frame. Stopped down the sharpness is incredible and vignetting disappears. Stopping down also improves contrast, which is common, though it is still quite acceptable with this lens. It even has an extremely close focusing capability, allowing you to get just inches from the subject for a wide field of view and a smooth, out of focus background even at 16mm.Build: 4The lens is made of metal and has a very smooth focus ring with a big rubber coating. It requires quite a long throw allowing very fine tuning of focus. It is very enjoyable to use. The front and rear lens caps are both flimsy and can come off easily. I'd recommend replacing them if you can. The lens hood is good, though does not lock into place quite as firmly as my other lenses. The final reason I cannot give 5 stars is an issue I have when installing the lens. When turning it into place it seems to grind against my camera's lens mount and isn't smooth like my other lenses. So far it hasn't caused any problems or noticeable damage but it isn't the most pleasing feeling when handling expensive equipment.Price: 5I simply cannot believe this lens exists on the market for the asking price. If Canon or Nikon had made this lens it would likely cost two to three times more.I own this lens in Nikon mount, with the chip that allows the camera to control the exposure and aperture like a G series lens. As long as you keep the aperture ring set to f/22 you won't have any problems. So who is this lens for? Landscape and astrophotographers will love this lens on APS-C, giving a roughly 24mm equivalent field of view with the ability to get sharp pictures from f/2 to f/11. Like most lenses today, f/16 will show the effects of diffraction but images are still good. I would not go beyond f/16 and if you need more depth of field I would consider focus stacking. Manual focus is not an issue for this line of work, and a hyperfocal distance scale is printed on the lens. If you are more of a landscape shooter the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 II may be better for you, but if you ever plan to get into stars then go with the Samyang 16mm f/2. Both lenses offer similar IQ stopped down but the Samyang is sharper to the corners, especially wide open, and offers lower coma and will even save you a good amount of money. This lens, along with Samyang's other manual focus primes, are great for video work with their smooth manual focus. They also sell a cinema version of most of their lenses which offer smooth aperture changes. However if you don't need 16mm, Sigma's 18-35 f/1.8 will be more versatile and offering similar IQ, though it costs twice as much.I bought this to be able to capture great landscapes and nightscapes while staying with a light, inexpensive Nikon DX setup that I can hike with (as opposed to going full-frame). With my Nikon D7100 and this lens at f/2-2.8 I can get great exposures of the night sky in under 30 seconds at ISO 1600-3200. I chose it over Samyang's 14mm f/2.8 due to the larger aperture, sharper performance and a not-so-protruding lens element (can use filters!). Lenses like this and the Sigma 18-35 give DX a lot of hope. Though it is a specialized lens, it is highly recommended. 5Great lens for wide field astrophotography I use the Rokinon 16mm f/2.0 mainly for wide field Milky Way photography. There s some vignetting and stars are slightly oblonged in the corners but so far I m pleased with it. 4The Price/Performance Leader for Nikon Shooters into Night Sky and Daytime Landscape Photography... Purchased through Amazon shortly after Christmas 2014 to use for night sky photography (aurora borealis, milky way galaxy, star shots) and found that not only was this a sharp clear lens for those purposes but built extremely well and solid. It soon became my go to lens to use for certain types of macro shots and the clarity and depth of the resultant shots was astounding. A serious hunk of glass. I started using it in the day for landscape shots and some macro style shots as well. Note that this is for DX style camera bodies (I'm using this on a Nikon D3200 in case anyone cares) - if you have a full frame body you would get vignetting - there's a youtube video review of this lens where someone used this lens on a full frame body so you can see the result which was interesting. Read the other reviews - some people have had varying experiences with this lens but this has been a huge positive for me. 5Must Have For Milky Way The best lens for night photography on a DX body you can get. My only gripe is that I wish it had a lock at f/22 since it must be set to that to control the aperture from the body. 5Absolutely fantastic lens. Ok Absolutely fantastic lens. Ok, so it's not thousands of dollars and honestly if your a professional, my opinion may seem uneducated and uninformed. However, I'm not going to drop thousands into a lens and this lens preforms spectacularly on my Samsung NX500, as well it outperformed other lens equipped on Nikon and Canon cameras equipped with more expensive lenses,in part I think due to the 28 megapexil ASP-C sensor when compared to similar priced cameras. The say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will try a few thousand words worth of pictures to help others see the quality of this lense. 5Best, fastest wide-angle prime lens, for cropped sensors and for the price ANYWHERE. I bought this for my Nikon D5500 and this lens is just AWESOME. Takes clear, crisp, amazing landscapes!! Super fast and wide enough for night sky and milky way shots. It's made for cropped sensors (APS-C) so I get the full 16mm on my 5500. It's manual focus ONLY, but for this type of lens where you are usually focusing on a single point at a great distance, you would only be using manual focus anyway. 5Great when used correctly This lens for most ppl will really be like a 24mm, as im sure most ppl will have it on a APSC size camera, but its still really nice and wide even at that length. The lens itself is definitely really sharp in the middle if maybe at little soft on the edges especially wide open, but thats to be expected really. Its not the fastest lens in the world, and the focus ring will take some getting used to, as it has some decent weight and resistance to it, the throw is long, and if your focusing on something within a metre or two is where youre going to have to do the most pulling and pushing to get your focus nailed. The size of the lens itself also allows for the minimum focus distance to really be like basically touching the front of the lens, so you can get some above average macro results. All in all, I think this is really quality lens for the price and can be a great lens when used correctly. 5Excellent Lens I did a lot of research before putting money down on an expensive new lens, and this lens was totally worth it. I bought it explicitly for the purpose of landscape astrophotography and it works amazingly. I have a Nikon D3300 and it works just fine and performs so much better than the lenses I've tested previously. It also works well for day time landscapes at very short exposure times, but I love the night time pics it produces! 5
