Customer Reviews

Close up stills very good. Far away objects and video not so great. I've had no technical issues with this camera whatsoever. Hooked up to the PC fine and the Spherical software is basic but it does what it is supposed to do. My android phone and tablet can connect and control the camera just fine over wifi as well. Ricoh even has an app for the Samsung Gear VR in the Oculus store for taking and viewing images which works great. From a usability standpoint, this camera has been flawless and easy to set up and configure. It gets 5 stars for that. The body also "feels" sturdy. It doesn't feel cheaply made in the least. Another 5 stars.Ok now the not so good.First, you really need a smartphone (Android, iPhone only) to set things like ISO, exposure, etc... You can get by without one for just point and click but there are no settings on the camera itself. The real downside of this camera is the quality of the video and to some degree the stills as well.Videos can be poor (as in terrible) in normal lighting conditions. Even inside an office with phosphorescent lighting produces bad looking videos. Lots of noise and focus is always always always a bit blurry. Things are much better in sunlight for video and is much more acceptable for usage outside. Technically it is HD but when you take an HD video and wrap it around a 360 sphere it looks less and less HD and even worse than SD.In terms of noise reduction, photos are better than video and you have options for noise reduction, shutter priority, and ISO settings (no aperture priority).Objects at more than 5ft are quite blurry so taking a 360 pano of a medium sized room doesn't look so good. A picture of people sitting in a room is 'ok' but won't look as good as same priced camera with images stitched together. My Samsung S6 can produce much much better looking images with 360 pano software (though I still have to pan the room). For close up objects (such as objects/food on a table near the camera), the focus is quite good (as in great). I can see a "foodie" liking this camera just to take a snapshot of their meals. So for video, it works best in sunlight. Inside looks bad. For stills, the closer an object is the better. 4Works great for construction I m an engineer and the Ricoh Theta S works great for site visits when I travel for work. I also purchased a 6 tripod that works great with it. Using the app on my phone (both android and iPhone), I m able to walk around the corner and not appear in any of the photos since the camera sends a live image (via the camera s own WiFi network) to my phone. The camera has a lot of customizable settings including ISO and shutter speed. It s not the best at high contrast (say a black ceiling and a glaring light in it) but I ve had very good results with a tripod when shooting in low light. I purchased two more for my team after being impressed with the first one we bought. It s now a must have in our travel tool kit. The camera has a shutter button so you don t need the app to use it. The camera s biggest con is it doesn t have a screen but it s not a huge issue because the app is pretty decent. You do have to download Richo s software to fully take advantage of the 360 degree images but it s free. I wish they offered software for their videos (they might but I haven t found it). 5Perfect 360 camera for vacations. I used to have the theta sc for work to take pictures of buildings we were remodeling and it was invaluable. Saved my ass multiple times catching things i would have missed. I also got to take a lot of cool pictures traveling the nation. I bought this one for personal use, its a little more expensive than the sc but i figured it took higher quality pictures. I didnt realize the only difference is the length of video you can record. No matter, it still takes good photos but if youre not interested in video, just get the sc, its identical, less expensive, and comes in more colors. The theta in my opinion is the best 360 camera you can get for still photos. All the other cameras on the market are shaped like balls or something worse and dont easily fit in your pocket. They are more geared towards mounting it on your bike or snowboard to record video. This thing fits in your pocket nicely and you can take it out n take pics and post them to social media easily. Im very happy with it.I also bought mine used, it came with everything but the instruction manual which is online. It was like new condition as advertised and shipped promptly. 4Awesome 360 degree camera! Have been enjoying this camera ever since I got it! The photos look great and the videos are a bit lower in quality but not to the point where it's just pixilated, still looks nice. The build of the camera feels very sturdy though it's advised to still handle with care and though it does come with a pouch, I highly recommend getting a hard case for it due to the dual lenses.Just as technology goes, a better version of this will more than likely be out by next year, though if you're hesitant on the current 360 degree cameras to buy today, highly recommend this one. Feels nice, looks nice and is slim to easily slide into your pocket unlike the others that are much more bulky.**Also one more thing (I may save a life with this review) when you download the PC/Mac application of Ricoh's software to view your photos and videos in a 360 degree view, MAKE SURE you have the latest version of Adobe Air downloaded. Many users weren't able to get their application to launch and we're not aware they needed Adobe Air support. Hope that may help if you are lost!** 5Save your money for something better Bought this because of the relatively low price and as an introduction to 360 camera. Didn t expect much and didn t get much. Video quality is horrendous if any type of movement is involved since there is no stabilization. Video in generally is terrible because of the low resolution. Pictures are ok but your average phone will take better pictures. Don t be fooled by when it states HD video or 14mp photos. What you have to consider is that when you record or take photos in 360, you have to spread those pixels across a much greater range. A 14mp photo looks like a 3mp photo on a non 360 camera but of course with more in the frame. Same with video. Because the area of coverage is so great, you can barely make out what you are looking at. The camera seems well built and helped me understand in what situations a 360 camera could be useful. Fun for awhile until the novelty runs out. 2Best VR camera for the price point and easy to use! I am a virtual reality software engineer who has had experience with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift DK2 and new consumer version, and various other devices.I have also used the M15 in the past. The form factor of both devices was great and I ultimately chose to buy the newer model due to the ability to make longer videos. In the M15, the resolution is too low and the contrast in picture quality is not great, where colors appear undersaturated and flat. The S, in contrast, is definitely a notch above the m15. However, this device is still prone to overexposure when taking 360 photos outside. The Theta S is a big improvement than its predecessor, but in my opinion not enough to warrant purchasing an entirely new device if you have the older model. You get 25 minutes to record 1080 HD video as opposed to 6 minutes on the M15, but keep in mind that uploading it into Youtube truly skews the image quality so the videos do not truly feel like HD. However, the Ricoh Theta software will auto stitch your video while exporting which minimizes the time spent editing, saving the consumer many hours. The videos are not completely seamless and are subject to some fish-eye distortion. The S comes with live preview, which uses the WiFi capabilities enabled in the camera itself. The shutter range is small, and you must be close to the camera for reliable operation. While it is neat to have this capability, the shoddy execution from the weak range leaves something to be desired. The S comes with a neoprene sleeve that fits snugly against the camera. However, we decided to buy a hard case for added lens protection, as Ricoh does not offer a warranty in the case that the lens themselves become damaged. The S controls are extremely easy to use, and just the press of a button will take a 360 photo. However, if you want the images to look as beautiful as they can, a fair amount of post processing might still be required to get the dynamic range seen in reality.Overall, I feel like this is the best VR camera you can get at this price point. The quality will not be able to rival a GoPro VR rig, but the amount of effort required in post production is severely minimized by Ricoh Theta. With a GoPro rig, you need to spend 2,500 dollars and also buy or #D print a mount to house all of the camera together. It also requires that you sync the individual shutters and control the settings so that the VR immersion isn't disrupted by the varying exposures, which can take a lot of time. The Ricoh Theta S is a great introduction to the world of VR, and is able to fit in such a small form factor that is extremely portable. As an avid Amazon shopper, I rely heavily on reviews to research before purchasing items. I did not expect image quality this good. You can clearly see faces up to a few feet away (they'll be tiny, but you can zoom). Plus the sensor must have some dynamic lighting algorithm because I'm amazed at how it takes in the shadows outside without blowing out the sky too much, regardless of my hand's subtle shakiness, I've never seen motion blur. I've been photographing with the exposure bias at one whole stop brighter and everything looks great at that setting. Otherwise, presumably everything would be too dark. But with that one adjustment, I've been amazed by the image. The body is hefty, and I dropped it on my third photograph, and all that happened was the facade separated a little (like when you pop the case/back off a phone body). I snapped it back in and although a little loose, it works A-OK. Only gripe is that sharing the files aren't as easy as I expected. I have to connect to it with my camera through wifi in order to see the image live, and when I take a photo it takes a moment to transfer the image to the phone. To see it in 3-D it has to be in the app (on my phone), or I can post it to my facebook which has a 3D viewer. I found the files in my phone and they appear like the flat map projection of earth from NASA (with the top rows really stretched). The secondary Ricoh app that I thought would allow me to render out OTHER flat projections doesn't do any of the projections I expected it to do... That's my only issue. Otherwise a new way to visualize and more-or-less document my travels. Also neat to take a photo when eating out with friends and everyone is frame! 5Too much fun for humans I went with this purchase after seeing how expensive and complex it would be to use a go pro cluster. Since this device is about as convenient in VR photography and video as the Flip was I bought years ago for HD video this struck me as perfect for the amature use I have in mind. And I am cheap. Differences I am learning to live with is no idea what the camera is seeing without a smartphone until after I load the video on my computer. But so far I am okay with that and believe it or not still use a dumb phone instead of one that would do that for me. But actually, if use of this warrants that might actually be the app that pushes me finally in that direction. One odd thing with this camera I am curious about hearing from others regards the video results being counterintuitive for me. I initially used the camera vertically but found the video to require using the Oculus Rift from a tilt to the side to see the video correctly. So next I used a tripod that allows the camera to be fixed horizontally. Seems counterintuitive. Is that the way others have to use it?Update: don't drop it. I did and since then the one lens has taken much fuzzier pictures which makes half the image blurry. Rather than replace it though I am waiting for the V to come out this month, 5Ugly red dot lens flare This is a fun camera but suffers from ugly lens flare when photos are taken out in full sun. I purchased this to use on my outdoor adventures. All the photos that I took out in full sun had an ugly red dot. I thought it was a defect in the sensor so I returned the first one and got a replacement. The second one also showed the ugly red dot. After going on the theta forum, I found that this is a lens flare. Someone on the forum suggested to make sure that one of lens face the sun. I tried it but it still didn't work. It's a fun camera if you are planning to use it for indoors or where there is no direct sun in the photo. Unfortunately, that is not how I planned to use this camera so I am returning it. Hopefully the next iteration will fix this issue. 2Improved from the first version, still has a bit of a ways to go. It does what it says it does. The pictures are pretty decent, as long as you have even exposure. Doesn't do terribly well when one side is lit much brighter than the other. Video quality is just ok too, despite the massive size. And it takes FOREVER to process. If you take a 10 minute video, be prepared to not be able to use the camera for 10 - 15 minutes afterwards while it processes. As long as you know what you're getting into (new tech in a relatively new field), you'll be fine. Support isn't quite there yet, the apps are still a bit quirky and clunky, but if you know what you're doing, it's relatively easy to navigate.Wish the battery life was longer, or that you could power through USB while shooting to memory (currently the only way to power off USB/DC is when you're in streaming mode, which requires a computer. Removable media would be nice too.. 4
