Customer Reviews

Indispensable tool for landscape photography! Ansel Adams once said that the supreme test for any photographer is landscape photography. Perhaps he was talking about the difficulty to correctly expose two segments that always require very different exposures: Land and Sky.This filter resolves the dilemma, almost with no penalty to image quality, at least not a perceivable one, for all practical purposes. The difference between the dark and light area of the filter is about two stops (Please correct me, I might be wrong) and that should be enough pretty much for every situation. But it would be nice if the stop differential would be stated on the product. For the price, however, it makes me happy.A great tool for beginners and photographers on a budget! 5Really great for the price I started using this shooting B roll on 2 documentaries recently and I can't emphasize how much it improves image quality - everything exposes better, it just looks good. 5No problems with my setup and planned use. Works pretty well for my uses.I find that ordering grad filters online is usually hit/miss if you can't try them out before ordering though. In this case, the price was low enough that I wouldn't really care if it didn't work out, or if I broke it (very likely).Only 'problem' was it had this weird greasy substance all over it when mine came in. Normally it wouldn't really bother me but it was surprisingly hard to get off, so four stars for that. 4Nice Effect Have used this a bunch for some landscape photos. The only thing I would have liked on it would be a little less depth on the ND. That is, I would have liked the filter effect to not come down quite so far... maybe 30% instead of 50%. I'm not talking about the density of the filter, just how far the effects drops into the photo. Works really well, however. Saves me a bunch of sky darkening in Photoshop. 4Great ND filter. Could be improved (a little) I've used this on several vacations and it makes travel pictures that include the sky much better. No more washed out skies. While I enjoy the product, there are two things that could make it even better. (1) Since the filter must be rotated so that the dark part is at the top, it would be great if a small dot (or other indicator) were visible on the outside of the metal band. As it is, I have to keep looking into the end of the lens (and it's harder than it might seem to orient it just right). (2) Also, it's often just a *tiny* bit too dark sometimes; a *slightly* lighter filter would probably be better. Still, it's nothing that can't be adjusted for in a couple seconds during post-processing. 5Four Stars Great product, no issues. I don't use it in full ND mode so no X pattern. 4A secret weapon One of the hardest things in photography is to expose for both bright skies and foreground shadows. It's usually one or the other: have a nice blue sky and dark shadows or open up for the shadows and blow out the sky. Or you can invoke the HDR electronic tricks available in cameras today where two exposures are taken in rapid succession and the highlights from one are combined with the shadows of the other to increase the dynamic range. This 77mm rotating filter knocks the sky down the old fashioned way -- with smoothly graduated neutral density -- and allows you to open up for the shadows. The effect is stunning, yet it's almost impossible to see that a filter is being used as the graduation is very smooth.I intend to use this especially when shooting video outside, where the subject is in open shade or under a diffuser so he's not blinded and can read the teleprompter, but the background is in full sunlight. Looking forward to doing some time lapse sunsets, too. This filter has the effect of expanding the dynamic range of the camera. HDR and other dynamic range tricks aren't even possible with video, so this filter will be most effective. The filter screws into the 77mm front thread and can still freely rotate so you can position the graduation where you want it. And the lens hood still works too, to control flare. We used to have to use a matte box for this effect. And if you've priced a 4x4 grad, you'll be shocked. Try somewhere between $60 and $150 per filter, plus the clumsy mattebox filter holder and you lose your lens shade, too boot. This Fotodiox rotating grad is a bargain and will come in very handy! 5Cheap, good quality, few drawbacks, i keep it in my camera bag! When buying a filter as cheap as this, the quality is of course the first question. This filter doesn't feel like a B&W, nor should it, but it does feel reasonably well constructed. My thoughts:-Good overall construction-Good overall optical quality-The transition zone is overall nice, bit i wish it were a tad more gradual.-The strength of the ND area is good, not to much and not too little for a wide variety of situations.-To prevent thread stick, use a q-tip to apply a TINY amount of Vaseline to the threads.I do photo and video, and for video you have to keep in mind is that there are only a few situations where this would be useful, since any camera movement or subject going from top to bottom would make the filter apparently. However for landscape video it can work quite well.If you're thinking of getting a grad ND, i don't see any reason not to grab one of these, 5Good filter Works well. Quality seems good. Produces either dark skies, or brings sky closer to same exposure as the ground in contrasty landscapes. Recommended. Here are links to shots I've taken with it:https://www.flickr.com/photos/paultrottier/15392802397/in/dateposted-public/https://www.flickr.com/photos/paultrottier/15578801055/in/dateposted-public/https://www.flickr.com/photos/paultrottier/15578805655/in/dateposted-public/ 5Good quality; good results I placed this on my Tamron 10-24 for some wide angle sunrise shots. It gave me great results. I also photographed the Virginia Blue Ridge mountains with this, and it turned the approaching storm into a frighteningly dark sky... cool effect. Very pleased! 5
