Description

  • X1 UV (Ultra Violet) FILTER: The X1 UV features 4-layers of our state-of-the-art and uniformly applied MRC, which means less flaring and ghosting that you'd normally see with uncoated protection filters. Our modern coating chambers are air tight, producing a uniform coating visible to the human eye when holding the filter at a right angle to a direct light source.
  • MRC4 CONSTRUCTION: Two layers of MRC are applied to each side of the optical disk, resulting in a total of 4 layers (MRC4). In addition to being structurally harder than the glass itself, our MRC coating process increases light transmission from 94.6% (without MRC) to 97.8%. Glass without MRC coatings is highly susceptible to a range of optical phenomenon such as flaring, ghosting (lower contrast as a result) and generally less saturation.
  • ELIMINATES VIGNETTING: The X1 features a 3.5mm ultra-slim double-threaded frame profile to eliminate vignetting on wide-angle full-frame setups. In our lab tests, 4.2mm was the frame width at which point 1-stop of light falloff (vignetting) became visible on images with 16mm wide-angle setups on full-frame cameras.
  • X1 UV 77mm FITMENT: The X1 UV has front-threads, which means it's compatible with all your existing filters (for stacking) and lens caps. To ensure the lettering on the filter never wears off we laser engrave text into each aluminum frame rather than use paint-based lettering.
  • 25 YEARS SUPPORT: We laser engrave each X1 UV with a unique serial number. When you activate your 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee online we associate your X1 serial number to you, so any future discussions regarding your X1 UV are tracked, issues recorded, all of which goes directly into our design and prototyping pipeline.

Customer Reviews

Too slim, shattered easily by lens cap. Follow Up: This ultra slim design is toooooo slim. So slim that the lens cap of a Tamron 70-200 2.8 actually touches the filter, and guest what, it shattered the filter when I was carrying the camera in a padded, secured case. Avoid this design, you're probably better off getting a full profile filter instead of a slim design.Received today, packaged very well. However, upon taking it out of it's case there were about 5-10 specs of dust as well as a bit of a mar that took a bit of elbow grease to remove. Once cleaned it appear to be OK. Using it for protecting a Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2. I would have hoped that the filter was perfect upon opening since it was going directly onto a new lens right out of its packaging and I was hoping to avoid trapping dust between the lens and filter. Nope. That was asking too much of the filter to be perfectly clean. 1Evident care in manufacture and an unambiguous guarantee Having purchased a pair of Canon's Great Whites (an EF 100~400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS II and an EF 70~210 f/2.8L IS II), those lens's seemingly enormous 77mm front elements seemed to call for the best quality protection available. Breakthrough Photography's assertion that their 77mm UV MRC4 "Ultra-slim" filters are "Weather-sealed," combined with their willingness to undertake a 25 year commitment to support of these registered serial-numbered filters sealed the deal, so-to-speak. The filters appear to have been precisely manufactured and show no apparent flaws. Only time and use will test the claims. I have every hope that use of these filters will validate Breakthrough Photography's unambiguous claim of quality. 5High Quality Product I needed a new UV filter for my new Canon 16-35 f/4 lens. I had heard good things on the FB Real Estate Photography page about Breakthrough Photography, a San Francisco based company specializing in filters, and so I placed my order with them. The filter arrived in a plastic case inside a nicely crafted cardboard box which also contained a black lens cloth, a card explaining how to activate the 25 year guarantee (!) and a separate card with the email address and telephone number of the company's founder, Graham Clark. The whole package gave an impression of high quality and pride in the product which in turn gave me, the customer, a sense of confidence. The filter itself is very thin which is important in a wide-angle lens in order to avoid vignetting. I am very pleased indeed with the purchase and would unhesitatingly recommend this company to others. 5At first I was less than pleased with this filter and was on the verge of ... At first I was less than pleased with this filter and was on the verge of sending it back. After removing it from the box, I noticed it was somewhat dirty and needed to be cleaned. I don't think it was used, but instead may have sat around in some less favorable conditions before it was sealed up in the plastic case. It was made worse by the fact that I ordered a B+W polarizer at the same time and it came out of its case in pristine condition with no cleaning required. While cleaning for the better part of 15 minutes I thought I had some aberrations in the glass that weren't surface contaminants. It likely wouldn't be enough to show in images based on their size, but it would surely be the nail in the coffin for purchasing another item from this company again. As luck would have it, what I thought were issues with the glass started to come off on what was going to be my last attempt at removing them. Everything looked good after all the time I wasn't expecting to put into a brand new filter.Shooting with this filter since then has been great. It cleans easily, screws on smoothly and doesn't create any noticeable distortion in pictures. Dust blows off quickly and water spotting comes off with minimal effort. On my Canon 17-55mm lens, the photos don't have any noticeable chromatic aberrations or purple fringing when shooting wide focal lengths beyond what the lens produces on its own. In all my with/without tests, I haven't found any where it's evident there's even a filter present which isn't something I can say for others I've had in the past. The field testing speaks for itself though and it's done well in several months of use. Even at 17mm which is the wide end of the lens I'm primarily using this on, the color fringing at the edges is no worse than the standalone lens without a filter. At the end of the day I'd purchase this filter again and recommend it to others, but the first impression could use a bit of work. This is my first product from Breakthrough Photography and I'll certainly look at their lineup for future purchases.PROS- Easy to clean- No noticeable distortion compared to a standalone lens without filters- Great price compared to more expensive competitors- Works with center pinch-type lens capsCONS- Aluminum threads may not be as robust as brass if you plan to take it on and off frequently. This is more for awareness than anything though and is a trade off for the price point.- Arrived dirty 5Good quality but the glare taking pictures directly into light excluded my recommendation Received it, then put on the Sony 24-105mm lens with the A7R3 camera...Took some pictures of the yellow ceiling light in my room. Then replaced it with the B&W UV filter, took the same pictures with the exact same camera settings, the pictures taken with this filter created a blue color glare in the pictures while the ones from the B&W did not have any glare. Returned the filter and bought another B&W. Not sure if this issue is only on the least expensive BreakThrough or not. The B&W is more expensive but it has no glare AND it has the brass ring. You can try that and see. 3Very good quality filter from a U.S. company. What's not to like?? I've had a lot of different kinds of filters (UV, Polarizers, ND) in various sizes for various lenses. When I came across this one, I decided that, though a bit pricey, I wanted to give this U.S. company a try. I'm happy I did. This filter seems very well made frame wise, the filter itself is crystal clear and cleans easily and the fit it perfect (and the packaging is the nicest I've seen on a filter). I live in the high desert area of New Mexico and, though I don't think you always need a filter on for protection, I do it here. When shooting outside, without notice, you can find yourself hiking through some pretty good wind with sand and dust. So I do it for protection mainly but, with this filter, I really don't think there is any negative effect on image quality.I'll use this one with confidence and, when I need anymore for future lenses or applications, I look at what Breakthrough has first. 5Not reflective of the quality of this company's better products I'm not sure how to write this review. I got hooked on Breakthrough Photography's filters when I purchased their x4 Polarizer that was introduced on Kickstarter about two years ago. The fit and finish were excellent and the resulting images were stunning (when a polarizing filter is employed properly). When I decided at the beginning of 2018 that it was time to purchase UV filters for my lenses, I didn't hesitate to order a bunch of Breakthrough's x1 models in a few different sizes. All of them were well-assembled, but the glass appeared to have a cloudy appearance. I figured that perhaps they were stored in their cases too long and the plastic had leached a film on the glass, but no amount or method of cleaning removed the haze. I had to assume that it was part of the original glass manufacture. I contacted the company to replace some of these filters and they responded professionally with replacements that were generally no better than the original order. I didn't want to not like these filters, but the degradation of images was too great to ignore. I shoot with mostly Nikkor lenses that have been carefully tested for color fidelity and sharpness. Just for grins, I ordered their UV x4 level filter. The difference was like night and day, but so was the price (about 5 times as much). At that price level, there are several alternative companies from which to choose. The x4 model is made of Schott glass, so no matter which manufacturer you choose, the mount design may change but the glass won't. At that point, why not shop for price? I hope I'm being fair to the company by writing the review this way. I support US companies and I'm glad to see so many positive reviews for this brand. However, my observations are truthful. Decide for yourself, I suppose. 2The Hoya MRC is half the price of this filter and just as good! Of course breakthrough doesn't want to compare to ... I can't believe the overhyped reviews for this uv filter! For what you pay this filter is a joke. They laughingly compare this to the tiffen filter even though this is 2x the price of the tiffen. The Hoya MRC is half the price of this filter and just as good! Of course breakthrough doesn't want to compare to that because it's easier to brag about specifications when you compare to a much lower tier product. The filter is super thin but also super fragile, do not expect this to offer any serious protection to your lens. The worst part is this filter doesn't stay screwed on very well, basically from me taking it in and out of my camera bag and taking cap off it's unscrewing and becomes loose! So I retighten it and only to see it loose again after a few more days. Don't believe these 5 star reviews this thing is overpriced for what you get. Optically it's OK but no difference between the much cheaper Hoya MRC filter. Save your many and get a basic 15 dollar MRC filter or spring for the pro standard and get a b&w I promise you won't regret it. 1Easiest brand to keep clean In my opinion, there are many brands out there which ensure very minimal impact upon your image. To me, this brand performs every bit as good as any of the higher level ones, but where it really stands out is in how easy it is it is to clean. In my experiences, I've very rarely have anything stick to it which I cannot quickly remove with a brush. Just the minimization of time spent cleaning it, really makes this brand stand out to me. I could not recommend it higher! 5I don t know what the1 star reviewers do to their product. LOL I have bought over 10 of these filters for the last 3 years and NEVER had a problem with any of them. Although the first one I purchased came all shattered (ha) but any after those have performed beautifully. They re perfectly machine crafted, unlike many other brands that are bulky and these are attractively slim. They are helpful for keeping dust and grime away from the actual lens without being abtrusive. I am dedicated to this company and any new lens I buy, if they have the proper size, I go with them.It just so happened that a Panasonic lens I bought recently was too small for them to have the filter size. 5
